curious

Mood: curious

I'm a big documentary buff and well, I would love some trans* documentaries to watch, FtM preferred but anything is welcome!

I've watched everything available on netflix and I would like things that I can easily access on the internet without having to go download it. topdocumentaryfilms.com doesn't have anything I haven't watch so...

Halp?

Do you have any recommendations of the documentaries on Netflix? I'm always wary of trans* documentaries, because I worry that they'll be too gawky and "by cis people for cis people," you know?

Yea. I'll go dig around netflix and get back to you but topdocu has the taboo episode on transgenderism. I thought it was going to absolutely terrible and I went into it expecting to be offended and...It's really really good!

Beautiful Daughters seems to be the only one I can find. I enjoyed Trained in the Ways of Men but that's really sad. You can check out Gender Rebels but I was kinda iffy on that. I enjoyed Venus Boys (if they still have that) but that is mostly drag kings but one or two of them are FtMs.

last I checked, transgeneration (a miniseries from like 2005) was available to be streamed from netflix. It had some 'eh' moments and actually the trans female characters/documentees were more interesting to me than the trans male documentees, but...it's ok.

Not anymore, sadly. DVD only.

It is not on netflix, but it is available via internet: Gender Redesigner.

I found it to be very refreshing and happy.
fAe is so awesome and I can really relate to him better than, Thomas, Chaz, or any other more "binary" guy in the media today.
Cheers.

I actually felt that was more about the cis people around him than him specifically.

Just Call Me Kade is a documentary I saw a really long time ago, when I was about 13 (I'm 23 now, so I assume the documentary was produced in 1999 or 2000). If you can locate it, it's a good documentary about a kid who transitioned at a young age and began living as male as a teenager. [Also, my apologies if I accidentally got the title wrong; as I indicated, it's been about 10 years since I've seen the documentary.]

I've heard that Southern Comfort is also a good documentary. AFAIK, it's about a transsexual guy's final year of life as he battles cancer.

I know the site www.documentarystorm.com has at least 5 Transgender themed docs.

You Don't Know Dick is a documentary from the 1990s about transsexual men that I really enjoyed. I don't know how hard it is to find a copy these days, though. I saw it on PBS back in the day. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118206/

It seems to be on http://www.letmewatchthis.ch/watch-125886-You-Dont-Know-Dick-Courageous-Hearts-of-Transsexual-Men but I have never used that site so I can't vouch for its legitimacy at all.

The version that ended up on PBS had edited out some parts. Not sure whether that other link has the whole thing. I'll give it a watch some time.

Most of my favorite trans documentaries were not available online, but i could get them through inter-library loan. So even if your local library doesn't have them, you might find another library in its system that does. And if you have a college near by, sometimes you can get a community account for a small fee that gives you access to their documentaries and inter-library loan system as well.
Documentaries i liked:
Ke Kulana He Mahu: Remembering a Sense of Place
Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton's Cafeteria
Call Me Malcolm
Southern Comfort
Cruel & Unusual

I've seen Cruel and Unusual on YouTube, also, Boy I Am, The Aggressives, Make Me A Man, Red Without Blue.
